Local Farmer’s Market Brings Nassau County Residents Together

Nassau County residents browsed the Long Beach Farmers Market on Sept. 12 at Kennedy Plaza to get their fresh fruits and vegetables in an outdoor setting.

The crisp Saturday morning air carried traces of pickles, coffee and the nearby beach. A mom looked at her young daughter and excitedly asked, “Do you want to get some fruits and veggies?”

There were approximately 60 people at the market on Saturday, one of four markets brought to Nassau County residents by LI Greenmarket Organization. Every week on Wednesday and Saturday, tents are set up in Kennedy Plaza from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. where locals can buy certified organic vegetables, herbs and greens, among other commodities. In addition to its fresh produce, the market offers products ranging from wood and homemade jewelry to pretzels and plants.

People danced to music coming from a small boombox and chatted amicably with their friends while waiting on long lines. Meanwhile, vendors paced back and forth in their tents to make sure their products were perfectly in place and presentable enough for the shoppers. A woman stopped at one tent containing a display of plants and told the vendor she loves succulents: to which the vendor laughed and responded, “me too.”

The purpose of the market is to supply a selection of locally grown food to the public, providing healthy options while simultaneously supporting regional farmers. The organizers encourage their shoppers to shop sustainably and help save the planet.

With the desire for a sense of normalcy during these times, the Long Beach Farmers Market provides an opportunity to purchase fresh produce while engaging in safe, outdoor socialization.
